DESIGNS FOR GATING CRASH CUSHIONS BASED ON SCRAP TIRES EMBEDDED IN FOAMED CONCRETE

Proposed is a new type of momentum-transfer module based on scrap tires encased in foamed concrete to be used as crash cushions on curves or road dividers. It is expected that the composite scrap tire-foamed concrete blocks will have a longer service life than the sand filled barrels that are currently used. The foamed concrete prevents the tires from being an insect breeding ground or a fire hazard. Initial design activities indicate that the modules can be relatively simple. These crash cushion elements can be fabricated in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors; they can be pigmented with earth tones to blend into the roadside; they require minimum inspection and are cost effective.
