Fluid-Structure Interaction Issues in Deformation Based Subsea Propulsion Systems

The development of a fluid-structure interaction framework is described. The framework is modular in nature, which allows for the use of existing commercial and research solvers and is used to study propulsion systems that use shape deformation such as SCUBA fins. The framework is comprised of various modules which are described and, in the case of the fluid solver module, validated. The fluid solver was used to resolve the turbulent flowfield about a 2-D circular cylinder at a Reynolds number of 140,000. The results obtained compare favourably to those reported in the literature. The fluid-structure interaction framework is then used to simulate a pitching and heaving rigid 3-D fin and a flexible fin undergoing the same motion. The results are then compared and show the eect that even limited flexibility has on the performance of the system.
