Direct deterrence--An analysis of the effectiveness of police patrol and other crime prevention technologies

Abstract A new concept of deterrence useful to the analysis of crime control strategies is proposed—direct deterrence. Models of police patrol offered by Blumstein, Larson, Elliot, and Sardino and their utility to the analysis of police direct deterrence are discussed. An analysis is performed that develops, first, the relationship between the use of a crime prevention technology and the amount of direct deterrence provided and, second, the relationship between criminal activity and the application of direct deterrence.
