Computer-Supported Creative Structural Design

In this paper, a model for creative engineering design using a network-based design prototype representation and a mutation technique is presented. The model distinguishes between a domain-dependent representation of design knowledge and domain independent mutation operator that manipulates the representation. The model extends the representation of design prototypes beyond a parametric expression of function, performance, behavior, and structure to include an explicit representation of the semantics of the relationships between parameters within a prototype. The model described here includes the development of a mutation operator, SCALE, to produce creative design ideas. SCALE manipulates the structure of a prototype and deliberately violates design constraints in order to generate new solution descriptions that cannot be produced by prototype instantiation. The model is illustrated in the domain of structural system design for buildings.
