Disturbed Balance Due to Lesions of the Cranio-Cervtcal Junction

As the medical profession is primarily concerned with disease, interest was first aroused by the most dramatic type of disturbed equilibrium, i.e. Meniere's disease which is mainly of labyrinthine origin. A similar type of vertigo can also be induced artificially by rotation or by the motion of a ship, i.e. direct stimulation of the labyrinths. This explains why the labyrinth is still considered the 'organ of equilibrium'.
