POPULATION STRUCTURE AND FECUNDITY OF ANOPSILANA OAXACA CARVACHO & HAASMANN, 1984 (ISOPODA, CIROLANIDAE) OF THE PACIFIC COAST OF MEXICO

The Anopsilana oaxaca population at Coyuca Lagoon only inhabits the water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes roots and was sampled monthly from January 1997 to April 1998. Variations in the population structure, sex ratio, and fecundity were studied. The population comprised all stages of the life cycle year round, thus showing continuous reproduction. Juveniles represented 6.1 to 56.4%, and are directly recruited within the population. Females consistently predominated over males, often by a ratio of more than 3 : 1. Gravid females carry 8-85 eggs and 12-77 embryos in the brood pouch. Hurricane "Pauline" hit the study area in October, causing the absence of both E. crassipes and A. oaxaca for three months in the lagoon.
