Enhanced clutter processing for the U.K. weather radar network

Abstract This paper summarises some of the main results relating to clutter treatment arising from a two year project designed to investigate how Doppler might be utilised within the United Kingdom weather radar network By providing access to polar reflectivity data in a relatively unmodified form, the project has also allowed investigation of more general issues relating to the treatment of clutter, including techniques suitable for non-Doppler systems. The aim is to develop an integrated approach to clutter treatment, with methods suitable for systems with differing capabilities being developed within the same common framework. In addition to actual clutter removal, simple and operationally viable methods for monitoring radar performance and predicting clutter extent have been demonstrated.
