Power plant model verification at ISO New England

Generator dynamic model accuracy is crucial to various studies conducted at ISO/RTO. Both planning and operations departments need to run time-domain simulations to determine a particular contingency's impact to the system. Inaccurate models could result in wrong conclusions and put risk to the grid operations. To evaluate New England system's dynamic model accuracy, ISO-NE has developed a MATLAB based Batch Power Plant Model Verification (BPPMV) tool. The tool calls TSAT to run PMU data playback simulation. Currently it is set up to evaluate twenty PMU monitored generators and one SVC for a specified disturbance event with one click. A novel, non-iterative, power flow initialization process was proposed and implemented in the tool. Two real disturbance events were used to demonstrate the process, showcase the tool's capability and present the insights.
