Latest developments in the field of textile antennas

Soon after the introduction of smart textiles it was clear that there was a need for body-centric communication tools that were compatible with these kind of textiles. Thus, research into textile-based antennas started. However, when integrating textile antennas into garments new challenges occur, such as the proximity of the body, antennas subjected to bending and washing. These issues are described in this chapter. Furthermore, a classification of most recent developments in wearable antennas, according to the frequency band of operation, is given. Frequencies range from the lowest ISM band (868 MHz) to the recently explored 60 GHz band. Wearable antenna technology has evolved from simple rectangular patches to more complex topologies and uses a range of textile materials.
