EFFECT OF THYROTROPIN-RELEASING HORMONE (TRH) UPON THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE IN WOMEN

ABSTRACT The effect of oral administration of TRH on plasma LH, FSH, estrogens, progesterone and prolactin was studied in six cycles. Forty mg TRH given daily throughout the cycle to one subject did not block the LH surge, but produced a significant depression of progesterone levels. When the same dose was given during the luteal phase only, progesterone levels significantly decreased in 2 women but in 2 others they remained within the normal range. FSH and LH, estrogens and prolactin remained within the normal range in all subjects. One woman developed side effects which prompted discontinuation of TRH.
