This article describes Japanese efforts toward constructing and operating long-term seafloor observing systems. Greater details are provided in those areas and to those systems in which the authors have been involved. The impetus for this area of research is to be able to obtain long-term time-series data from the ocean floor near Japan for earthquake risk assessment and mitigation.
