Teaching signals and systems at undergraduate level

Abstract Signals and systems is a complex subject and effective teaching even at the introductory level requires a means of communicating complex concepts to students. One of the difficulties in teaching this topic is because of the advanced mathematics involved. At the Near East University in Cyprus we teach the signals and systems course at the undergraduate level to electrical/electronic engineering students. Although the students in general are interested in learning the concepts, they usually have difficulty in understanding the complex theory. To address this issue, we have introduced extensive practical work in the form of simulation and laboratory sessions. This paper discusses our experiences of teaching the signals and systems course with the successful implementation and integration of the theory, simulation, and practical sessions.
