Motion sickness and spatial perception. A theoretical study.

Abstract : Theories of motion sickness are reviewed and compared with a new theory in which the activity of the central nervous system is more important than the intensity or modality of sensory stimulation. Concepts treated are the development and validation of an inertial reference frame; the perceptual transformation of sensory data, which reduces its content, increases its reliability and can incorporate compensations for environmental variables; and the consequences of perceptual inadequacy.
