Abstract It is axiomatic that a biological standard or reference preparation should have the longest possible currency. Longevity is achieved only by the close control of those factors which are responsible for the deterioration of biological activity. The present paper considers the steps necessary to present biological materials in suitable form to serve as standards and reference preparations.
