Degradation of insulation shield in termination immersion agent

In dissassembling a faulty termination of a 110kV XLPE cable, severely degraded insulation shield, which had been in contact with the termination agent for a long time, was found. Tests ineicate that the insulation shield of XLPE cables is badly compatible with the common termination agents and long time of contact will cause great change in physical/mechanical properties as well as conductance of the insulation shield. Therefore it is of importance to separate the insulation shield from the termination agent in design, manufacture and installation of XLPE cable terminations.
