On the orientation function of the electric dichroism of DNA

Various orientation functions based on the ‘‘saturating induced dipole model’’ are fitted to the electric dichroism data of DNA restriction fragments measured by Diekmann et al. All functions give acceptable to excellent fits. Orientation functions with an increasing number of fittable parameters are discussed. The DNA fragment length dependence of the fitted parameters as well as the error sum of the fit of some functions are presented. Simple orientation functions with three free parameters are suggested: the polarizability, the saturation field strength, and the limiting electric dichroism at infinite field strength.
