The present paper deals with the elastic response of the large scale barge type floating structures in short head waves. The floating structures were approximated with the free-free beam and the displacement responses of structures were expressed by using the principal coordinates and the principal modes consisted of rigid and elastic modes. The hydrodynamic and wave exciting forces were computed with the source distribution method utilizing the assumption of zero draft body. The experiments were carried out by using a transient water waves and the three types of elastic beam model. The numerical results of displacements and bending moments obtained by the present and strip methods were compared with the experimental results and some discussions were made.
