ANALYSIS OFPOWERSYSTEMSTABILITY ENHANCEMENT BYSTATICVARCOMPENSATORS

Thepaperpresents a fundamental analysis of the application of staticVArcompensators (SVC) for stabilizing powersystems. BasicSVCcontrol strategies are examinedin termsof enhancing thedynamic and transient stabilities, improving tieline transmission capacityanddamping poweroscillations. Synchronizing and damping torquecontributions oftheSVCaredeter- minedfor different controls. Theanalysis issupple- mentedby digitalsimulations fora simplepractical example. Deficiencies ofavailable control policies are demonstrated and a new concept, basedon optimal control, isdeveloped.
