Direct Methods in the Study of the Dynamics of Large-scale Electric Power Systems - A Survey

Abstract This survey is not intended to give a complete bibliographical list of the publications which have appeared on the subject. Rather, it attempts to bring out the progess accomplished in the field during the past two decades, the maturity achieved, and the practical possibilities offered nowadays by direct methods to the transient stability study of large-scale power systems. Two distinct methodologies are considered and explored. The first is concerned with direct methods as derived from both the scalar and the vector Lyapunov approaches. Within this context, particular attention is focused on the definition of practical stability domain estimates suitable for off-line transient stability studies. The second methodology deals with stability indices, a concept appropriate for on-line stability assessment.
