Buffeting Performance of Free-Standing Tower of Long-Span Cable-Stayed Bridge under Yawed Wind

The buffeting performance of the free-standing tower of Zhanjiang Bay Bridge, a long-span cable- stayed bridge, under yaw wind is investigated by means of wind tunnel test of aeroelastic full model. It is found that the variation of buffeting response of the free-standing tower with wind yaw angle is not monotonous. The longitudinal and lateral buffeting responses of the free-standing tower attain their minimal values at around 30° of wind yaw angle and reach their maximal values at about 0°or 90°of wind yaw angle. It is also seen that,in general, the buffeting responses increase with the increase of wind speed at a conic curve approximately. The measured peak factors are different to some extent for the longitudinal, lateral and torsional buffeting responses of the free-standing tower, and the averaged values are 2.72,3.38 and 3.62,respectively.
