Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Bovine Serum Albumin Interaction Studies of a Binuclear Copper(II) Complex with Naphthylacetic Acid

A binuclear copper(II) complex, [Cu(NAA)2(DMF)]2·0.5DMF· 0.5H2O (NAA = 1-naphthylacetic acid, DMF = N,bmN-dimethylformamide) has been synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results suggest that this complex structure belongs to triclinic crystal system. The Cu(II) central atom situated in a distorted square pyramidal geometry is five-coordinated. The interaction between Cu(II) complex and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated by electron absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The binding constant K b , corresponding thermodynamic parameters ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG at different temperatures, were calculated according to van't Hoff equation. The binding process of Cu(II) complex on BSA was a spontaneous molecular interaction procedure in which entropy increased and Gibbs free energy decreased. Hydrophobic interaction force plays a major role in stabilizing the complex. The antimicrobial activity of the complex has been tested on three different microorganisms.
