A study of some properties of titanium boronitride used for the coating of cutting tools

Abstract Titanium boronitride coatings produced by chemical vapour deposition were studied. The microhardness increased linearly with the atomic ratio B (B + N) but cubic boronitride coatings do not have a better oxidation resistance than a nitride coating. In the machining of steel the Ti(B,N) coating has a much better resistance to cratering and flank wear than the TiN coating.
