I n t r o d u c t i o n One of the main difficulties in Chinese natural language understanding is the problem of segmentation (dividing a sentence into its component words). The Chinese language is based on ideographic characters with no inflections for word boundaries. Each character may be a word by itself or may be conibined with neighbori.g, cha,;~c~ers. We are developing a system which segments sei~tences into words using a massivcb," parallel network. !n addition t,o providing a novel solution io segmentation, the proposed system permits integrating current massively paralM parsing techniques iXVALT85! for Chinese natural language understanding.
