The experience of a large-scale smoking cessation clinic which was set up in conjunction with a mass media campaign, is described. The therapies employed were selected as suitable for use with large numbers of clients, could be self-applied and were suitable for short term programmes. Approximately one in four of those who attended at least one session reported they had ceased smoking. Hypnosis-assisted treatment was the least successful treatment. Overall compliance with the programme was low. The implication of these findings for future programmes is discussed.
