The Automation Odyssey: Library and Archives System Design Considerations.

This paper considers the issues and concerns relating to the integration of archival and manuscripts records into library systems, and how those systems can be used to support archival functions. Factors of im ortance in system design include: the differences in the nature of have and archival materials; the functions undertaken by libraries and archives, especially bibliographic control and retrieval; and varying library and archival needs for authority control and holdings/location information. Reasons to pursue shared systems, and issues for further action are also considered.
