Sarah (Sally) J Parsons and J Thomas (Tom) Parsons are Professors of Microbiology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. Sally Parsons obtained her BA degree from Valparaiso University and her PhD degree in Microbiology from Duke University. Following a 7-year sabbatical to raise children, she returned to complete postdoctoral studies at the University of Virginia. She subsequently joined the faculty in Microbiology at the University of Virginia, where she is currently full professor and Associate Director for Research in the Cancer Center. Sally is best known for her studies on the role of c-Src in epidermal growth factor signaling in normal and cancer cells, and in regulating neuroendocrine cell function and contributions to oncogenesis. Tom Parsons obtained a BA degree from Depauw University and a PhD degree in Biochemistry from Duke University. Following postdoctoral studies in St Louis and the University of Zurich, he joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Virginia, where he is currently Professor and Chairman. Tom is best known for studies on the structure and function of Src and the characterization of Src substrates, including the initial identification and characterization of Focal Adhesion Kinase.
