CONSIDERATIONS FOR A VISUAL ARCHITECTURE

Many aspects of the visual process are beginning to be understood, through the efforts of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, psychophysics and computer vision. What is needed now is the integration of all components into one coherent functional whole: the definition of a visual architecture. It is argued here that this problem is nearing a threshold. We are able to define it with greater and greater clarity; most of the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle are on the table, they only have to be put together; many misconceptions have been identified and are being put out of the way; massively parallel machines promise to soon give us the necessary processing power; and the motivation and man-power directed at the issue are rapidly increasing. My paper intends to focus attention on the problem.
