An investigation of monitoring configurations

Monitoring is increasingly required for distributed systems to ensure reliability and correctness of run-time behaviour. We are especially interested in monitoring systems that allow for both distributed data collection and analysis as well as for directives to be issued dynamically to the monitoring system. The monitoring system must be able to determine a set of agents and a configuration of agents that can collect the requested data with minimal performance degradation. This paper results from an initial investigation into trying to determine good configurations of agents for collection and analysis of data.
