Parallelism for Simulations of an Entire Shock Tunnel Facility

During the operation of a shock tunnel the growth of the viscous boundary layer on the tube wall causes attenuation of the shock and acceleration of the contact surface. This significantly reduces the test time and, because the boundary layer is often turbulent, results in noise being introduced into the test flow. The interaction of the reflected shock with the boundary layer and contact surface also introduces noise and can cause driver gas to be accelerated downstream, prematurely contaminating the test flow.
