Impact of Neutral Current on Concentric Cable Overloading

Harmonic and neutral current can lead to additional heating of a concentric cable. With the increasing number of non-linear loads integrated to the distribution system, it has been a critical issue in power system planning about how to determine the cable ampacity. However, there is no sufficient study on the neutral current estimation and cable overloading factor (COF) of the underground cable. In addition, old standards about cable ampacity are based on fundamental current. In this paper, an analytical method is proposed for calculating the neutral current of long-distance concentric cables with MGN configuration. Furthermore, a new index is proposed for determining the overloading factors in the presence of harmonic and neutral current.
