Some trends and challenges in wind turbine upscaling

The wind turbine industry is continuously trying to reduce the cost of wind energy. A trend in this regard is the upscaling trend which tries to increase the power output of wind parks by increasing the power produced by each individual turbine. However bigger wind turbines impose higher loads on the wind turbine drive train. Good design of the drive train is indispensable for the reliable and optimal operation of the turbine. This paper discusses some of the trends related to the drive train design for these upscaled machines.
