User Needs: A Synthesis and Analysis of Current Theories for the Practitioner.

There have been significant developments in the study of user needs during the last twenty years. This paper examines, synthesizes, and, on a narrower scale, analyzes such developments in an effort to determine areas of con sensus in the field concerning specific aspects of greater interest to the practicing librarian. In an effort to shed light on consensus, the paper is organized into six parts: the user, information/knowledge, information seeking, using information/knowledge, the system, and future research needs.
