AIRCRAFT CONFLICT DETECTION IN PRESENCE OF SPATIALLY CORRELATED WIND PERTURBATIONS

We study the automated aircraft conflict detection problem. Specifically, we introduce a method for estimating the probability that two aircraft flying at the same altitude get closer than a prescribed safe distance thus causing a conflict. The correlation between the wind perturbations to the aircraft positions is taken into consideration when computing the probability of conflict. The procedure used to estimate the probability of conflict is based on the introduction of a Markov chain approximation of the stochastic processes modeling the aircraft motions.
