Study on Bending Stiffness of Solid Post Composite Insulator

Solid post composite insulators are mainly used for bending load in heavy equipment, such as electric reactor and capacitor tower. The flexural rigidity of solid post composite insulator, especially used in anti-seismic equipment, is the focus question among the power industry experts. In this study, flexural rigidity and equivalent bending modulus were calculated theoretically and verified via composite classical lamination theory. Firstly, the basic engineering constants were obtained from mechanical properties of composite laminates with particular formula. Next, the equation of flexural rigidity and equivalent bending modulus were derived through the equivalent between winding glass fiber reinforced polymer composite tube and skew symmetric layers of plywood. Then, theoretical calculation of solid post composite insulator flexural rigidity and equivalent bending modulus was conducted using the engineering elastic constants. Finally, typical products were produced to verify the results of theory prediction equation. The achievement of this study can provide not only new methods for characterization of mechanical property, but also basis of theory and data of solid post composite insulator.
