ON TRACK WITH AN INNOVATIVE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR CANE RAILWAYS

CSR Sugar embarked on a rail infrastructure and traffic management review during the 2000 maintenance season to reduce rail operating risk to as low as reasonably practical (ALARP). The outcomes of this review led CSR to develop and implement a number of safety initiatives supporting existing rail traffic management processes. The development, Project Railsafe, combines vehicle tracking, collision advisory and operator interface technologies with operating procedures to ensure an enhanced level of operational safety. A major component of Railsafe is the Locomotive Tracking and Collision Advisory System (LTCAS). This paper will discuss the processes, procedures, hazard analysis and technologies utilised in the development and implementation of the Locomotive Tracking and Collision Advisory System.
