Minimizing switching activity in input word by offset and its low power applications for FIR filters

For the low power operation of digital filters, the circuit design technique has been considered first. Due to the characteristics of signals such as voice and image, the switching behavior of input data, which makes circuitry toggle, should be included in the design stage. In this paper, the input switching activity minimization method, by offset, is presented. The offset signal reduces the switching frequency of the small magnitude anti-correlated signal in 2's complement representation. It is shown that the filter design, combining 2's complement numbers and offset signal insertion, can give more power saving with small additional hardware cost.
