On the basis of various examinations and long years of observation, discusses the possible negative influences of various structural characteristics of a canvas as a cause for damage to paintings. It further seeks to explain how these individual characteristics themselves may be analyzed in a simple way: by determining the directions of warp and weft, the density of the fabric, the thread's direction and degree of twist, the irregularities of the threads, the density of weft, warp, and canvas as a whole, etc. Documenting canvas structures in such a way not only helps to clarify various damages in retrospect, but also to determine the origin of a painting; most of all, however, they serve a practical purpose in helping to decide whether or not to reline or to impregnate or how to set the climatic conditions of an exhibition. Practical and arithmetical examples which can be easily put into practice during restoration serve to emphasize the individual aspects of this subject. -- AATA
