Identification and Tracking of Rapidly Time-Varying Mobile Channels for Improved Equalization : A Basis-Expansion Model Approach

With basis expansion models, communications over rapidly time-varying channels can be implemented using block transmission, a conventional technique for slow-fading channels. In addition, based on channel tracking, an efficient variable-size block method for improving equalization quality in block-transmission systems has been previously proposed. The goal of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of this channel-tracking method when applied to rapidly fading channels. It is shown that, by appropriately modifying the channel estimation and equalization procedures, the same benefits as in a slow-fading system can be obtained. Simulation results demonstrate the improved performance resulting from the use of channel tracking in rapidly time-varying channels.
