Machine vision has been considered as one of the most promising technologies for developing and deploying Advanced Traffic Management System and Advanced Traveller Information System applications. Although experimental video detection systems are being developed worldwide, a real-life, practical and effective application has been elusive. This paper describes the first and largest application of video detection and its integration with adaptive control in a network of 28 intersections in Oakland County, Michigan. The Broader project called FAST-TRAC, which includes a driver information system, is also summarized. The successful deployment of the state-of-the-art detection/adaptive control system has led to the decision to expand it to 93 intersections by June 1993, and ultimately to 800 intersections by 1996.
