Fueling power plants with high sulfur coal in compliance with emission standards

We compare the economics of the two most advanced strategies for meeting current SO2 emission standards in power plants fueled with high sulfur coal. One strategy calls for converting high sulfur coals to clean synfuels before combustion. The other involves direct coal burning, followed by fuel gas desulfurization (FGD). Our results show that the FGD route is preferable.
