Optimal channel sensing maximising sum rate in cognitive radio with multiple secondary links

The channel sensing problem maximising the sum rate of primary and secondary users in cognitive radio networks is considered. Previously, the optimal sensing characteristics, that is false alarm and detection probabilities, in cognitive radio with single secondary user were investigated. In this paper, we extend to cases with multiple secondary users, and the characteristics of a sum rate and the optimal sensing are investigated under a given primary activity factor. Additionally, the asymptotic behaviour of the optimal sensing point is examined as the number of secondary users increases under the round robin and p-ALOHA multiple access schemes. It is shown that the optimal sensing point converges to a constant, which is determined by the primary activity factor, primary and secondary link qualities. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
