The infective process in scrapie.

Abstract It is suggested that the essential part of the scrapie-infection process is the transfer, from infected host, of a " linkage substance " which enables pathologically incompetent, incomplete D.N.A./ polysaccharide subvirus in the susceptible recipient to bind strongly to cellular membranes, thereby becoming a complete infectious complex. This hypothesis fits in with many of the puzzling features of scrapie, and may throw light on other nervous-system disorders such as multiple sclerosis and kuru.
