Crowd Sourcing as a Business Model for Connected Vehicle

Establishment of 3G and 4G mobile telecommunication networks has made connected vehicles a possibility. Vehicles connected with 3G and 4G technologies can support content rich applications delivery from the network cloud such as video, audio, gaming and navigation. More importantly, user-generated contents can be uploaded or downloaded without any bottleneck. This means new services can be created to fully utilize information or content provided by individual vehicles or its occupants. Such information can cover a wide range including its location presence, speed, audio, even video. Business models still need to be established in order to move the vehicle connectivity from a proof of concept to marketing. Connect Program, a cross-industry collaboration initiative, is bringing together key players from multiple industries including telecommunication, automobile electronics, embedded software and content creation and working on establishing business models that benefit all the industries. Here in this paper the authors share the concept of Connected Car, examples of potential business models of crowd sourcing, and challenges in realizing them.
