What's the Hype?: Interactive Patient Education for Adolescents

The last decade has seen the rise of computer-based patient education. The World Wide Web provides hypertext documents on a range of subjects, but such information can be piecemeal and difficult to find. There is a need for short, accessible and informative programs that can take full advantage of the computer's interactive capability. This paper describes such an initiative. What's the Hype? comprises four patient education modules about asthma, body image, drugs and alcohol and HIV/AIDS. What's the Hype is freely available from the web site: http://www.monash.edu.au/informatics/hype/hype.htm. Preliminary results from evaluation are highly positive, underlining the need for more computer-based materials of this nature.
