NEUROPHYSIOLOGY | Seizure Detection and Prediction

To help in the diagnosis of epilepsy and to localize the epileptic focus, it is important to record the EEG during seizures. However, seizures are usually relatively rare and unpredictable. The automatic detection of seizures facilitates their observation and analysis, primarily in the context of long-term monitoring with scalp or intracerebral electrodes. Routine detection, and perhaps especially, prediction, of seizures would be a great help to epileptic patients – e.g., if they could wear an implantable device that would warn them that a seizure has just started or will start in the near future. In this article, we review the state of knowledge in seizure detection and prediction.
