Nutritional status, plasmatic concentrations of Zinc and Aluminum and its correlation regarding cognitive development of children and adolescents diagnosed with down syndrome in the city of Campo Grande/MS

The present study evaluated the plasmatic concentration of Zinc and Aluminum of children and adolescents with Down Syndrome and its correlation with their cognitive development. The study was carried out from April to July/2014 in the city of Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. Individuals (N=30) with age between 06 and 16 years agreed to participate in the study. To assess the cognitive development, it was utilized the “human figure drawing test III” proposed by Wechsler, 2003. The plasma levels of Zinc and Aluminum were measured by an Optical Emission Spectrometer with Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma (ICP-OES) located in the Mineral Metabolism Laboratory of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul. Results indicated that there is a need in monitoring the plasma concentrations of Zinc and Aluminum in children and adolescents with Down Syndrome. On the other hand, there is no relationship of both regarding the cognitive maturity on such individuals. Palavras-chave: Zinco, alumínio, cognição, Síndrome de Down. Integralidade.
