Karyotaxonomy in Poaceae III. Further studies of somatic chromosomes1

Among the species the locality of which is designated as United States of America in Table 1, species belonging to Hordeae and Bronzeae are the plants which sprouted from the seeds collected and brought back by Dr. S. Makino in 1953, and the others are those which germinated from the seeds adhered to herbarium specimens sent by Dr. R. W. Pohl. The seeds of Himalayan materials were collected and brought back by Mr. S. Nakao who was a member of Japan Himalayan Expedition in 1952. All species mentioned above were cultivated in our garden at National Institute of Genetics for cytological studies. Bamboos in which root tips were used for this research are mostly the plants grown at Koisikawa Botanical Garden in Tokyo. Except the materials mentioned above, the others were collected at various localities in Japan by the writer. Localities are as follows; Iwate-ken-Mt. Hayatine, Hiratuto and Morioka; Tiba-ken-Matudo; Tokyo-to-Meguro, Suginami and Izumi-Tamagawa; Kanagawa-ken-Ninomiya and Hakone; Yamanasi-ken-Mitake-Syosenkyo and Mt. Mitutoge; Sizuoka-ken-Mt. Daruma, Makinogo, Misima, Numazu and Ito; Nagano-ken-Mt. Nyugasa, Mt. Yari, Mt. Hotaka, Kamikoti and Mt. Siomi; Wakayama-ken-Waka yama, Kata, Sirahama and Kainan. Navashin's solution was used for fixation. Paraffin sections were cut at 12-15 micra and Newton's gentian violet method was used for staining. All the figures were drawn with an Abbe drawing apparatus at a magnification of 2000.
