Microcontroller implementation of current-mode control for a discontinuous mode boost converter

In order to demonstrate the feasibility of digital current-mode control (CMC) for DC-DC converters, a microcontroller-based current mode controller for a boost converter was developed. The current mode controller is implemented using a PIC14000 microcontroller from Microchip, Inc. Described Are the main design issues and some practical design considerations. Experimental results are also presented. The microcontroller-based CMC boost converter has demonstrated satisfactory performance in laboratory tests. The digital controller has been compared to an analog controller based on a UC2843 from Texas Instruments, Inc.
