Fault Simulation and Severity Analysis in Wind Energy System

High capacity wind energy systems are commonly remotely located. The wind itself causes various mechanical and electrical flaws due to its stochastic nature. The faults lead to output power fluctuations. The sensor faults cause reduced performance or abrupt system closure. The turbulent wind itself is a disturbance, leads the drive train dynamic stacking. To examine the wind energy system performance characteristics, the faults severity must be studied. This paper discusses the various sensor faults and their severity. A wind energy system with PI based controller is designed and simulated. The fault transmission study is done by the simulation of faults and their end effects are determined at system level. The study aims at designing the fault detection and fault tolerant controller for wind energy system.
