The results of several acoustic telemetry tests in both shallow and deep water

The US Navy has a requirement for the transfer of data to and from underwater vehicles while submerged during training exercises. The required environments are diverse. Both midrange shallow water and midrange deep water areas will be used for training. In the deep water case, the system must be very cheap and expendable; in the shallow water case, it will be a permanently installed system. One of the goals of the Range Technology Development Program is the design, development, and testing of an acoustic telemetry system that will meet these needs. As a part of the design and development, phases of the program, several experiments in acoustic telemetry were done. A variety of different modulation and synchronization signals have been sent. The location of the testing includes deep water in the Bahamas, shallow water in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts, and shallow water off Block Island, Rhode Island. A summary of the results of these tests is presented.
